A Quick Guide to Dry Socket: Should You Be Worried?

If you have a tooth extraction coming up, then you may be a bit nervous about the procedure itself. Your dentist will make it as comfortable as possible, but your recovery might also worry you. You may have heard of dry socket as a complication some patients experience, but is it really something to stress about? Here’s what you need to know about this condition and tips to prevent it.

Just What is Dry Socket?

Your body will need to recover after you have a tooth removed. It does this by forming a blood clot in the extraction site. This will cover exposed nerve endings and keep the area clean, but it can dissolve or dislodge before the initial healing is done. If this happens, then you’ll likely develop dry socket. The inner structures become exposed, oftentimes leading to severe discomfort that may radiate across your face.

Should I Worry About Dry Socket?

Typically, this condition occurs in the first two to five days after your treatment. It only affects about 2% to 5% of patients, with it being more common in wisdom teeth extractions. While it’s pretty rare, your dentist will also set you up for success by giving you detailed post-op instructions.

What Can I Do to Prevent Dry Socket?

While your dentist will send you home with more in-depth guidelines, some tips that they may give you are:

  • Avoid using straws as the sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot.
  • Quit using tobacco products. It can impact your recovery and slow it down, while dissolving the needed healing component.
  • Eat soft foods for the time being. Anything hot, spicy, and crunchy can lead to irritation, so give your mouth a break!
  • Don’t rinse your mouth aggressively. Simply tilt your head and let it soak the area instead.

If I Get Dry Socket, What Should I Do?

The odds of dry socket are low, but they aren’t zero, so it’s still important to know the signs of it and how your dentist can help. Aside from severe pain, you may also have an unpleasant taste in your mouth, bad breath, or the socket looks empty. By having your dentist take a look, they can then see if you have this condition.

If you do, then they may offer antibiotics if there’s an infection or irrigate the site. In some cases, a medicated dressing can be helpful as well.

In the end, dry socket isn’t really anything you should be too worried about, but be sure to do your part in preventing it. That way, you have a smooth recovery to a problem-free smile.
