Don’t Panic! Here’s What to Do if Your Veneer Falls Off

Porcelain veneers are designed to be strong, beautiful, and long-lasting—but even the best dental restorations can sometimes come loose. Whether your veneer popped off while eating or you found it missing one morning, try not to panic.

With the right steps, your smile can be restored quickly and safely.

Why Veneers Sometimes Fall Off

Veneers are bonded securely to your natural teeth using dental cement, but a few factors can weaken that bond over time. The most common causes include:

  • Normal wear and tear over many years
  • Tooth decay or damage beneath the veneer
  • Biting into something too hard, like ice or hard candy
  • Teeth grinding or clenching
  • A weakened adhesive bond

Even a perfectly placed veneer can come loose if the underlying tooth changes shape or structure. Fortunately, this doesn’t mean your veneer—or your tooth—is ruined.

What to Do Immediately

If your veneer falls off, the first thing to do is find it and handle it carefully. Avoid touching the inside surface, as oils from your fingers could affect the bond if it’s reattached. Place it in a small, clean container or plastic bag to bring with you to your dentist.

Next, inspect your tooth gently in the mirror. If it feels rough, sensitive, or looks discolored, that’s normal—your natural tooth is more exposed without the veneer’s protection. Avoid eating on that side and stay away from very hot or cold foods.

If the area feels uncomfortable, you can use dental wax (available at most pharmacies) to cover any sharp edges until you see your dentist. Never try to glue the veneer back on yourself; household adhesives can damage the tooth and make professional repair more difficult.

Temporary Fixes to Avoid

When a veneer falls off, it can be tempting to take matters into your own hands. However, certain quick fixes can do more harm than good. Avoid using:

  • Super glue or other non-dental adhesives
  • Over-the-counter dental cement
  • Toothpaste as a temporary hold

These substances can interfere with professional bonding and may even irritate your gums or damage your enamel. Your best option is to call your dentist as soon as possible and explain what happened—they’ll often be able to schedule a same-day or next-day repair.

What to Expect at Your Dental Visit

When you visit your dentist, they’ll evaluate both your tooth and the veneer to determine whether it can be reattached or if a replacement is needed. If the veneer is still in good condition, your dentist will clean both surfaces, apply fresh bonding material, and secure it in place.

If damage or decay is found, your dentist may recommend a new veneer or a different restoration. Either way, the process is usually straightforward, and your smile will look just as natural as before.

With proper care—including good oral hygiene, avoiding biting hard objects, and using a nightguard if you grind your teeth—veneers can last for a decade or longer without issues.

By staying calm and acting quickly, you can protect your tooth and preserve your smile’s appearance.
