Modern dentures are a great way to restore not only your smile but your confidence. They give you back teeth you were missing, but it’s important to keep them in great shape. Whether you’re new to the world of this prosthetic or want a refresher, continue reading this handy guide on how you can care for them to keep them in great shape and avoid any issues.

Clean Your Dentures Every Day

As you eat your favorite foods, bits and pieces of them can get stuck in your dentures, just like natural teeth! That means that they need to be cleaned regularly to prevent any stains and keep them fresh. Here is what you can do:

  • Remove your dentures and rinse them under cold or lukewarm water to wash away any morsels left behind. Avoid using hot water as the heat can warm the prosthetic material and affect the fit.
  • Brush your dentures twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, or a prosthetic-specific brush. You can use a specially formulated denture cleaner or mild, colorless hand soap to better remove bacteria. Don’t use regular toothpaste as it can be abrasive.

While you are over your sink brushing away, be sure to lay a towel over the counter or fill the sink with water. Dentures can be slippery when wet, so doing either of these can act as a cushion if they fall out of your hands.

Soak The Prosthetics During the Night

When you don’t have the prosthetic in your mouth or take them out for the night, it’s essential to put them in water or a denture-soaking solution. They are designed to stay moist to keep their shape, so doing this will help stop them from drying out and becoming brittle. If you are using a special solution, be sure to follow the instructions. In the morning, rinse the dentures thoroughly before you put them back in your mouth.

Be Aware of Any Changes to the Fit

Your gums and jawbone will change over time. This can make your dentures start to feel loose or not sit comfortably anymore, which can cause some problems. For instance, you may notice some sores or irritation and slipping when you are eating and talking. Head to your dentist if any of these occur, and they can reline them to bring them back to a good fit!

Additionally, if you use any denture adhesives, then use them as directed to avoid any messes and a more in-depth cleaning session.

Taking good care of your dentures doesn’t have to be a complicated process. Following this simple guide can help them last longer and let you get the most out of them. Keeping up with maintenance can ensure that they feel comfortable for years to come.
