Adjusting to life with dentures can take time, especially when it comes to eating. Whether you have full or partial dentures, the sensation of chewing, the way food feels in your mouth, and even the way flavors are experienced may be different at first. But with patience and a few practical tips, eating with dentures becomes much easier, and eventually, second nature. Here are 6 helpful tips to make your transition smoother.

1. Start with Soft Foods

In the beginning, choose soft, easy-to-chew foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal, and cooked vegetables. These options put less pressure on your gums and make it easier to get used to chewing with dentures. Gradually introduce firmer foods as you become more comfortable.

2. Cut Food into Smaller Pieces

Even with foods you’re used to eating, cutting them into small, manageable pieces can make a big difference. Smaller bites are easier to control and reduce the risk of dislodging your dentures. This also allows you to chew more slowly and carefully, which helps prevent irritation and promotes better digestion.

3. Chew Evenly on Both Sides

When you first start eating with dentures, it’s natural to chew on one side of the mouth. However, this can cause your dentures to become unstable or tilt. Try to chew evenly on both sides to keep the pressure balanced and your dentures securely in place.

4. Avoid Sticky and Hard Foods at First

Sticky foods like chewing gum, caramel, and taffy can pull on your dentures and cause them to slip. Hard foods like raw carrots, nuts, and popcorn kernels can be difficult to chew and may damage your dentures or hurt your gums. As your confidence grows, you can slowly reintroduce these foods if your dentist gives the okay.

5. Use Denture Adhesives if Needed

A well-fitted denture should stay in place on its own, but if you’re having trouble with slipping or discomfort while eating, a denture adhesive can offer extra stability. Ask your dentist for recommendations and instructions on how to use adhesive properly.

6. Stay Hydrated

Dry mouth can make it harder to chew and swallow, and it may also cause your dentures to feel loose. Drinking plenty of water during and between meals helps keep your mouth moist, makes chewing easier, and improves comfort while eating.

7. Practice Makes Perfect

Eating with dentures may feel awkward at first, but the more you practice, the more natural it will become. Try eating in private at home before going out to restaurants. With time, you’ll develop the coordination and confidence to enjoy your meals just like before.

Getting used to eating with dentures takes patience, practice, and a few smart adjustments. By starting slowly, choosing the right foods, and being mindful of how you chew, you’ll quickly regain confidence in your ability to eat comfortably and enjoy your favorite meals again.
